January 24, 2008 at 3:26 pm (Craps, Tech, Useless Information)

Just a quick update on my latest addictions:

1)Keane – Is It Any Wonder
I’ve never been much of a Keane fan – or rather, never bothered to listen to their songs despite the pseudo-hype – but I was given a CD by AiLing of Warner just the other day that featured the song “Is It Any Wonder”. I probably heard it on the radio before but I guess I just didn’t take note of it. I instantly got hooked onto the guitar rift and the dreamy bridge/chorus. So much that it’s my current favorite song to listen to while stoned. Heh!

2)Manic Street Preachers ft. Nina Perrson – Your Love Alone Is Not Enough
Ditto to the above – I never actually downloaded a MSP song to date, nor have I actively made an effort to tune into one of their songs on the radio. I wouldn’t be able to identify any of their other songs if you played them to me, nor would I be able to identify any of their band members (they’re a band, aren’t they?!). The song “Your Love Alone Is Not Enough” was the second song to catch my attention on the CD from AiLing, and I instantly recalled the no-bullshit rift a section of it’s MTV I once saw on TV. Not my favorite song, but it’s damn fucking catchy.

** I just found out that Nina was the ex front lady of The Cardigans. Probably explained why her voice sounded so fucking familiar! **

3)Nintendo DS
After months of wanting one, I finally got my grubby hands on a spankin’ new Nintendo DS Lite. Thanks Gwen! Since receiving it, I’ve bought myself a R4 card from Mid Valley and loaded up a good selection of games onto the micro SD card (thanks Charlene!), and spammed the little buttons till it’s been totally out of batteries … TWICE. Yup. I’ve been so addicted to it that I’ve played it dry twice over the span of three days (well, two if you start count from the day I got my R4 card).

Touch screen = fuckin chio!

It’s mad I’m tellin ya! I didn’t even go so gung ho when Gwen lent me the PS2! But at least I’m not the only one getting hooked on a mobile console – my housemate has been camping out in his room and smashing shit up in GTA on his PSP. Talking about the PSP, my mates keep on asking me why I opted for the DS. The PSP has much better graphics, and also a “better” selection of games available.

Well, to cut a long story short, the main reason I went for the DS would have to be just that. It’s different. The games on the PSP are too much like the games you’ll find on the PS2 (in my opinion), and since we already have a PS2 at home, I wanted something different. Sure, the graphics on the NDS aren’t barely as breathtaking as those you’ll see on the PSP (a NDS game ranges from 32-64 megs, while a PSP game can exceed 1GB) but the gameplay simply sits on a different level.

Kill those fucking Goombas!

Think of the PSP as the portable PS2/3 and the NDS as a portable Wii. Like the Wii, the NDS doesn’t stick to the tried and tested gaming method – i.e. button smashing. Thanks to the touch screen and built in microphone, gameplay on the NDS ranges from vanilla button mashing (in Mario), to random stylus slashing (in Wario), to vocal commands (in Nintendogs), and even a combination of any of the above (buttons + stylus in Pokemon, buttons + stylus + microphone in Mario Party). The network aspect of the NDS is also pretty exciting – with built-in WiFi capabilities, you can link up to nearby NDS’ ad-hoc and play network games. Some games dont even require the other players to have the same game cartridge (or downloaded game lah haha). How kick ass is that?!

It’s rated PG, so it can’t be THAT gay…

Rite now, I’m playing the New Super Mario Bros and Pokemon Diamond. Ok, so Pokemon might sound a tad gay, but so far it’s the best RPG game I have on the DS. I saw the Ninja Gaiden trailer on Gamespot, and it’s fucking chio. Can’t wait for it to be released!

Well, that’s about it for my short update. It’s back to work for a while, then it’s home to my NDS. Woot!

Ooo.. That’s so hot. Fag.

February 26, 2007 at 3:24 pm (Craps, GY 白 TULAN, Tech, 星 Talk)

With Chinese New Year festivities pretty much been done and over with (technically it’s not, but fuck technicalities rite?), it’s time to get back to the real world. I havn’t been blogging for two reasons – I’ve been out of town for much of the holidays, and I don’t have internet access at home (or a computer at my internet enabled home home).

Anyways, I thought I’d start this post with a little bit of tech news. Remember the big hoo haa between Apple and Cisco over the rather unimaginative name “iPhone”? Well, the bout is over – the clash of loggerheads has been ended – but sadly, the much anticipated climatic volcano of gooey smackdown was never laid to anyone.

Here’s Apple’s official word on the case –

Cisco and Apple Reach Agreement on iPhone Trademark

SAN JOSE and CUPERTINO, California—February 21, 2007—Cisco and Apple® today announced that they have resolved their dispute involving the “iPhone” trademark. Under the agreement, both companies are free to use the “iPhone” trademark on their products throughout the world. Both companies acknowledge the trademark ownership rights that have been granted, and each side will dismiss any pending actions regarding the trademark. In addition, Cisco and Apple will explore opportunities for interoperability in the areas of security, and consumer and enterprise communications. Other terms of the agreement are confidential.

In a sentence – they kissed and made up, settled for shared custody and called it a day. Gay.

I also would like to take this chance to make a confession. It’s not the manliest thing to admit to, but then at least I know that I’m not the only person in my circle who’s more than a little turned on by this sort of thing.

Yes, shamefully, I am admitting to being a fan of … *shrieks of horror* … celebrity gossip. Faridz has been a long time provider of celeb gossip on the Rendang blog for quite a while now, and he hasn’t been getting too much slack from anyone in particular, so I’m guessing it’s a safe topic to blog about (without fear of it damaging my manliness).

In honour of my new found time waster, I’m even creating a new catagory for shit regarding this, simply called 星 Talk (Xing Talk). FYI, it’s pronounced Xing like Sing, not like Zing or X-ray or Bangali Simi Sik.

Anyway, let’s get down to business – my inagural post is dedicated to the boys at Rendang for giving me the courage to step out of my comfort zone (bitching, whining, bitching, cussing, emo posts) and be a new aged man of many interests.

Osman Faridz, Razman and Johan, this one’s for you.

Signing off before Harry’s wang wand mis-fires.

February 6, 2007 at 7:17 pm (Craps, Tech)

Now I know why I don’t own a digital camera. Fourth post today, but it’s all good.

Some new gadgets in my office today:

It’s not just any notebook – it’s a MEGA BOOK.

Box ripped apart – innards revealed.

Mmm… MSI’s latest 12-inch notebook. Oops, I mean MEGABOOK.

Driver CD, power cables, mouse (?!!?) and a Windows XP CD (WTF WHERES THE FUCKIN VISTA?!!)

Oh? What’s this? A brand new C2D 20-inch iMac for the office, eh?

The Apple find’s its place on the designers table, not mine. *sob*

I’m Pro

December 13, 2006 at 10:52 pm (Announcement, Blogroll, Tech)

Yeap – it’s official.

I’m been put in charge of a tech blog that’s being run by my company. Seeing the sucess (both in terms of editorial content and advertising revenue) of other techblogs around the world like Engadget, Gizmodo, The Register and The Inquirer, it was only a matter of time before my company went back to its internet roots.

I’ve always been a fan of blogging since my highschool days, where I had to do everything in notepad and upload them to the shit we now call GeoCities, and then moving on to the community gaming blog – Challenge-MY. Being an avid blogger myself, I welcomed the project with open arms.

Hell, I’ve got a great team to work with so I’m guessing that this’ll be quite a breeze too!

Team members:

Editor – Chan Wern Shen
Sub Editor – Chan Wern Shen
Senior Writer – Chan Wern Shen
Writer – Chan Wern Shen
Technical Person -Vijay a.k.a Low Yatt . Net founder

Told you it was a great team! I guess I won’t be having deadline problems with my staff eh? LOL!

Anyways, as usual I’m always open to suggestions and of course contributions (all of which will be credited accordingly, of course). But then again, before sending shit over take note of the “Top 3 questions not to ask me:”.

Top 3 questions not to ask me:

Q: Do you get paid extra to do this?

A: Not yet, only because I just started on this project today. I see it as a great suppliment to my magazine and I guess if I can develop it then I’ll probably ask for a raise during my next appraisal. *hint to bosses who read this blog*

Q: Can be a writer for that blog?

A: Sure. But not just yet. The blog is still new, and I have to work out how contributions will go.

Q: Who chose that fucking domain?

A: It wasn’t me.

Now with all that cleared up, I proudly present you with the TechUpdater! It’s still new, so give me a chance ok?

Empty cans

December 12, 2006 at 1:35 pm (Announcement, Craps, Tech)

Usually sound the loudest.

I guess that means I’m not really empty then rite?

My colleagues have noted my sudden quietness in the office, as have some of my friends. I guess it’s not the end of the world though. I still have my work, I still have my family and of course I still have my friends.

I got myself quite a week lined up here, so it looks like work, work and more work – which usually I would be bitching about, but this time around I’m welcoming it with open arms.

I got a work trip (heh,I love saying that) to Langkawi lined up next Tuesday so I pretty much got to get all my shit done by then, cos boss is leaving back to Australia on the 22nd. That leaves me with 5 working days to complete a truck load of Stuff (no pun intended).

Once I’m back, I’m off to Kuching for my yearly pilgramage. I was supposed to come up with a whole itinerary for the Pan clan, but honestly, the combination of my workload and my apathy meant that the idea of putting responsibility on my shoulders was doomed from the start. I’ll only be back on the 29th, so I guess I’ll spend the week drinking cheap beer and running off to Damai beach every now and then. I’ll definately drop by Zing, and maybe check out Links. No idea what else to do back there so if anyone has anything interesting to do in Kuching, please please drop me a line.

Gwen has left KL, and will actively seeking a job in Singapore. Today is only the second day since she’s left, so I’m putting up pretty well. She’ll be back in KL for New Years Eve, so if any of you guys want to meet up with her, then that’s the time.

Oh, did I mention that I’m turning pro? Yeap. By the end of the week, I’ll be a Senior Writer cum Professional Blogger. LOL. Sounds good, don’t it?

Well, here’s the deal – my big boss has decided to start a network of blogs covering all sorts of topics. I’ll be the technology blog updater, and since I’m the only one who’s going to be actively working on this project, I guess I’m the boss for this one! Hah! I don’t know if I can let you guys know the URL yet, but if you’re resourceful and observant enough, you’ll probably have guessed it already.

He want’s it to be Engadget and Gizmodo-ish, which means I’ll get to bang shit anyway I like. I LIKE! :)

Oh well. I guess that’s all for now. It’s back to work for this not-so-empty can.

Turning the day Blu

November 29, 2006 at 11:31 am (Tech)

A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine splurged a large chunk of his moolah on one of these. Not too bad an investment, but when something like that uses yet another piece Sony proprietary storage, you don’t want to get caught out in the cold.

Speaking of which, I happened to receive this little gadget from a colleague today.

That’s 25 fucking GB on a single disc. But before you start going all loco over it, keep in mind that that little black number costs an ass-whopping RM2800, while the media (Blu-ray discs lah) go for about RM100 per piece.

PS. Please forgive the shitty image quality. It was taken off the SE W710i that I’m currently reviewing.

The unstoppable force hits the immovable object

October 12, 2006 at 11:56 am (Craps, GY 白 TULAN, Tech)

No, Chuck Norris doesn’t die in this one, but it seems that lots of braincells have.

Thanks to my current squeeze, I’ve learnt to appreciate the simple things in Windows – i.e. FreeCell.

Without it, I would surely be dead by now. Heck, I spend more time on FreeCell than in my Excel cells, which is just as well; you know how boring starting a new job gets. What more, when all the accounts have already been allocated, and you’re put on the waiting list for God knows what.

Without FreeCell, I would probably be bored to death and bursting with anxiety (for my trip to you know where).

Intrestingly enough, some dude has bothered to take the time to analyze and construct the unbeatable FreeCell puzzle.

P.S. Try your luck at FreeCell game #11982, and let me know if you win it.
